Overview
Finding the right career can be a long process of evaluation. Someone who is seeking to change careers must honestly appraise her strengths and weaknesses. Making lists of pros and cons can help you to evaluate careers and explore the possibilities of choosing them. Many career choices require a specific education, so college requirements come into play when choosing the career that's right for you. But by doing your homework and researching the career playing field, you can find yourself with a fulfilling and successful career.
Step 1
Research the careers that interest you. Talk to professionals who already work in that field. Take notes if you want to refer later to what was said. Go to the library and ask for books on different careers. Read about the careers you are considering. Take notes.
Step 2
Make a list of pros and cons for the careers you are considering. Take the time to talk to friends and family members to discuss your strengths and weaknesses. Talk about how they fit with the careers on your list. As you conduct your research, narrow down your list to two or three. If one career stands out for you during your research, choose that one. Otherwise, rank the careers by how much you think you would enjoy them.
Step 3
Make sure you can get the education needed for the career you've chosen. You might have to get a college degree. There is financial aid available for needy students, so don't let the cost keep you from pursuing the career of your dreams. Call the colleges and ask for information packets about financial aid. If you've found your calling for a particular career, do everything necessary to get the diploma required for that career. Guidance counselors can also help you chart your path to achieving your chosen career.
Step 4
Talk to everyone possible about your potential career choice. This is not only to get their feedback, but it helps when you hear yourself talking about a possible career. It makes the possibility of a particular career more concrete.
Step 5
Make your decision by choosing your career from your lists of pros and cons after ensuring you can attain the educational requirements. You can gain a measure of reassurance about your decision by talking about it with family members, who can help out with emotional support.
